Prescription medications are an enormously costly and concerning aspect of Ohio workers’ compensation. Decisions on the medications prescribed to injured employees for treatment of their injuries/conditions lie with the treating physicians themselves. The BWC utilizes a firm called Catamaran as their Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PMB). This PBM is responsible for the utilization management of the medications prescribed for workers’ compensation injuries, and for the payment of bills related to prescribed medications. For questions regarding payments for medications on a workers’ compensation claim, please contact Catamaran at 1-800-644-6292, press 0, option 3 and then option 2.

CHS aggressively reviews the medications prescribed in injury claims. We routinely identify instances where a questionable medication is prescribed based on the medical conditions allowed in the claim. Our Drug Utilization Review (DUR) department consults with our medical management team and Medical Director to refer cases to the BWC to consider discontinuing medications deemed inappropriate or excessive. We have secured over $1,000,000 in medical savings for our employers by closely monitoring prescription medications.
